Identifying and Addressing Common Health Issues in People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD): What Providers Should Know

Dara Abells, Alicia Thatcher, Marissa Blake

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often face health concerns that are more common within this group, which can sometimes present atypically or be missed. Early identification of these health issues is crucial, as untreated medical conditions can develop into more serious problems and may present as behaviours that challenge. This workshop will highlight health concerns commonly seen in people with IDD, with specific focus on gastrointestinal (digestive) and gynecological issues that are more common in individuals with IDD. Consideration will also be given to common health issues to think about with specific syndromes. Participants will gain practical tools to help recognize and manage these health concerns, particularly for individuals who may have difficulty expressing their symptoms.

After this session, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize and address common health issues in people with IDD.
  2. Identify behaviors that signal early health problems and apply strategies to address them promptly.
  3. Apply tools to identify and manage health issues for individuals with IDD, especially for people who may have difficulty expressing their symptoms.
