As adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) live longer, they may face the same health issues as older adults in the general population, along with unique challenges. This presentation explores aging, IDD, and dementia, including what we know and the challenges older adults with IDD face. We’ll introduce a new Canadian guide and resources designed to support adults with IDD affected by dementia who are living in the community. The guide was developed with input from people with IDD, their families, and support staff. We’ll also highlight two new Canadian research projects that focus on brain health and a screening tool designed to identify dementia in adults with IDD.
After this session, you will be able to:
- Understand the health challenges older adults with IDD face.
- Discover how the Canadian Guide for Community Care and Supports for Adults with IDD Affected by Dementia can be used in community settings.
- Learn how the NTG-EDSD screening tool can help identify dementia and other health issues in adults with IDD.
