Crisis to Calm: Navigating Behavioral Crises in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Presenter: Kerry Boyd

This session introduces the DDPCP’s “Initial Management of a Behavioral Crisis in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities” tool, offering a structured, compassionate approach to managing behavioral crises. Using the HELP model, we’ll explore practical steps to assess and address crisis factors with a trauma-informed perspective, respecting the experiences of individuals with IDD, their family caregivers and support professionals. Participants will leave with actionable tools and strategies for handling crises with empathy and confidence.

After this session, you will be able to:

  1. Plan effectively for crises using a clinical care pathway and tailored tools for individuals with IDD, their family caregivers, and support professionals.
  2. Apply the HELP model to identify and address key contributors to behavioral crises.
  3. Engage with empathy and trauma awareness, actively listening and responding in ways that honor the impact of stress and trauma in crisis situations.
